For a long time, larger ships have relied on on-board generated power when at berth. But oil-burning engines pose significant environmental problems – polluted air, noise and vibration. For ships of these sizes, such as container ships and cruise liners, conventional low-voltage ‘shore power’ is an insufficient source of power. This is whereOnshore Power Supply(OPS) systems come in as a solution. Our increasing environmental awareness has also led to stricter regulations for ships at berth. From 2030, the EU says that all ports must offer this solution.
Advantages of PPPs
- Less emissions
- Less noise
- Less costs
- Improving the working environment on board
- Relocatable container solution
Unitrafo offers customized transformers for OPS
In close cooperation with our manufacturers, we have developed a special type of “quayside” transformers for OPS systems, which can be produced in both cast-resin and liquid-insulated variants. The peculiarities of these transformers are that they must be very compact, while being adapted for operation inside a container. Electrically, they must also be designed for all conceivable voltages, different frequencies and be adapted for frequency converter operation.
The OPS solution in container is optimal to get maximum adaptability to different needs that could not be guaranteed otherwise. In fact, each ship has a specific power supply voltage and each port area has its own grid voltage and frequency.
Recently, our factory delivered 8 4000 kVA, 20/0.69 kV transformers with AFWF* ventilation system which were installed in a port in Denmark. The transformers, which are of cast resin type, meet all the required performance while maintaining extremely low dimensions and weights. The air and water exchange system is located in an enclosure in the lower part of the transformer (see picture below).
If you want to know more about this technology, or just want general information about our transformers, feel free to contact us by phone or our contact form. You can also make your own customized cost calculation on this page >>>
